Competition, spending power and white space

Population tells you how many people an area has. Household income tells you what they can spend, and nearby businesses tell you who's already competing for it. Population Explorer puts all three on one map, so you can spot the gap before a competitor does.

Every layer, and where it comes from

  • Residential population: WorldPop Global 2 from the University of Southampton, on a 100 m grid, covering 2015 to 2030 with age and sex breakdowns.

  • Daytime population: LandScan from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a grid of about 1 km, from 2016.

  • Household income: Population Explorer's own income layers, mapped onto the same grid as population, in 20 countries and in local currency.

  • Businesses: 250M+ locations from Google. Search by category or brand, then tag each result as a competitor, an ally or a general location.

  • Postal codes: 8 countries.

  • Administrative boundaries: worldwide, down to level 4 where a country has them.

Choose the source and year for each analysis, and keep them the same across the territories you compare.

Map the competition, and the businesses that help you

Search Google's business listings by category or brand, then tag each result as a competitor, an ally or a general location. Allies draw your customers without competing for their spend, like a health food store next to a gym. Save them to folders and see how crowded each territory is.

  • Competitor density: how many competitors fall inside each territory.

  • Ally density: where complementary businesses cluster.

  • White space: create a drive-time area around every competitor in one step, then look for the places none of them reach.
