Residential population counts where people live. Daytime population estimates where they are during the day: at work, at school, out shopping. A restaurant or gym benefits from daytime estimates, while home services and delivery prioritize residential. Population Explorer shows both for any area you draw, so you can better predict the success of your territory.

See where people spend the day

Daytime population comes from LandScan, built by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It models everyone present in an area across the day, not just the people who sleep there. Business districts, hospital campuses and retail corridors fill up; suburbs empty out.

  • Daytime heat map: switch it on to spot busy areas at a glance, before you draw anything.

  • Daytime differential: daytime population divided by residential. Above 1.0, an area fills up during the day; below 1.0, it empties out.

  • Example: a territory in São Luís, Brazil, holds 509,585 people during the day against 298,952 residents, 70% more.

Residential counts on a 100 m grid

Residential population comes from WorldPop Global 2, produced by the University of Southampton, on a 100 m grid. It only places people where buildings and settlements exist, so a territory's count reflects the streets inside it rather than an average spread across empty land - a common shortfall in census-based toolsets. WorldPop also breaks residential population down by age and sex.

  • 100 m cells: fine enough to show clusters that a 1 km grid hides.

  • Settlement-constrained: no population assigned to fields, forests or water.

  • Example: Ardea, near Rome, has 69,779 residents but 52,336 people during the day, 25% fewer. For a home-services brand, that's a market where customers are at home.

→ LandScan vs census vs WorldPop: which predicts retail success?

Trends over time, for both

Compare years to see whether an area is growing or shrinking. LandScan daytime population runs from 2016, and WorldPop residential estimates cover 2015 to 2030, including projections. Results show growth, density and size beside the totals, so you can compare trends across your whole portfolio.
